We have Goals, not Demands

I am a part of Parents for Occupy Wall St., and we'll be discussing our goals and much more tomorrow morning at (11/12/11) at 11 am in the Atrium. All are welcome.

The Occupation is constantly called upon to answer the question "What are their demands?" I refuse to accept this terminology. "Demands" implies a situation where we have an excess of leverage or perhaps even a hostage. This is absurd. We have no leverage over our government, and if anyone is being held hostage it is the 99%.

So I choose to reframe that question whenevert I answer it by starting out with "My goals are..." and finishing up with my little Dream List of reforms and actions to restore public faith in our system of government.

I live in New York and have been so exhilarated to live in this time and place to witness what may be the turning point of American politics. I wanted this moment to be a part of my story, and so I decided to take my girlfriend/baby mamma down to Liberty Plaza and ask her to be my wife using the people's mic to help me out:

Since it's Memorial Day, I thought I'd post this here for others to enjoy besides my friends on Facebook.

About a month ago, I received a book of poetry written by some distant relative of mine serving as Private in the Army at a base in the Philippines in the 1920s. I've been reading some of it at open mics and showing the book around to anyone who's interested. I don't know if this guy ever shared any of this stuff while he was serving or after but it's truly a gift for the world (the penmanship alone is amazing, nevermind the stellar quality of the actual writing).

There's almost 200 pages of this stuff, so I'll be scanning and transcribing it whenever I have some freetime over the course of the next couple months.

Senator Obama - Please, No Telecom Immunity and Get FISA Right

This is a group on My.BarackObama.com which has become the fastest growing with more than 1,500 new members in the last 2 days.

I became an Obama supporter because I believe in PEOPLE-Powered politicians. If you're an Obama supporter, I'm more for you than I am for him. The point of this backlash is that he must listen to us, because this bill is far worse for me and you than it is for him. It's up to us to remind him of this.

Criticism is the only antidote to error. It is the soul of democracy.

Below the fold is my first post to the group followed a few of the dozens of letters that have poured across the group in the last day. You won't find one person who isn't committed to getting a Democrat elected, what you will find are citizens who demand that their views be represented by that Democrat. Unity is not conformity.

What do they have in common?

Both of them were powerless without followers.

Think for yourselves.

Be the change you want to see.

No further explanation for the evils of the world is necessary, but apparently the machine thinks differently. That said, allow me to explain. Obama and Bush are two sides of the same coin. This does not mean there isn't a difference, it means that we must as a species recognize the power that we all possess. We live in a world of choice, whether we realize it or not. Every action will be taken deliberately, whether we are conscious of it or not. All of us arrived at their destinations by your own actions. The job of any concerned citizen is to raise awareness, to enlighten, not to scold or punish. This requires self-determination, and a profound ability to see that ALL of us are capable of both good and evil. Obama is as worthy of praise as Bush is worthy of forgiveness. Poverty for one is poverty for all. If we can accept that Bush is merely a misguided, flawed and manipulated being who is no different from the rest of us, then we can truly begin to treat the wounds that are threatening our very existence as a species. Good night and good morning

[This is an open source sort-of work in progress which I'll be adding to continually as my thoughts crystallize through other discussions. I'll take any critiques, but realize that my phrasing and argumentation is still very much in draft form.]

I think the danger of corporate structures is that too many of them shut out criticism from the people who do the actual work, many are organized as a series of mini-dictatorships. As an interactive designer/programmer in the advertising industry, I’ve been mostly tertiary to this decision making process, but I have on occasion seen how the authoritarian nature of corporate hierarchies can be harmful on a number of levels.

This post is heavily influenced by the documentary, The Corporation (below), as well as my own personal experience in and about the corporatocracy.

This is a personal question from me to the rest of the DailyKos community. I'm hoping that you'll pay it forward.

Knowing what you know regarding the conduct of the men in charge of our government right now, is just a little part of you afraid to speak out publicly?

Do you hesitate from bringing it up when given an opportunity?

Is there at least little part of you that is mortally afraid of what your government is capable of doing right now?

I am.

If you are, perhaps recommend to others outside this community. Obama is doing well, but I don't trust these guys when they're backed in a corner. And I feel like they could sneak up behind my back.

And share your fears. Because the only way these bastards win is through our silence.

Stay vocal. Stay vigilant.

This was initally a very private and personal introduction I wrote to an email I was forwarding Bill O'Reilly. I sent it to some friends and family and even an old high school teacher with whom I recently connected. I started to get a little choked up towards the end when the magnitude of the fight against these mother fuckers really hit me. Please share and recommend to your loved ones, because I am terrified of these thugs, but I'll be damned if I'm going to sit back and let them call ME INSANE.

As fellow travelers who have had your eyes open regarding the conduct of this nation over the recent years, either recently or for quite some time, Bill O'Reilly believes you are nuts. What is the act of insanity that you committed? Well you, like me, probably think Fox News is run by a bunch of propagandist liars who lead the charge to invade Iraq, and twice heralded the coming of Bush (of whom they are now rooting for his third term). I know... we're loons.

These are important times we live in, and I love you all very much. I am terrified of what my country has demonstrated itself to be capable of.

Dear Keith,

I am writing in regard to the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, which has been passed in the House and is now under consideration in the Senate. I find the language of this bill to be highly troubling considering on the vague definitions and broad findings. For example:

(3) HOMEGROWN TERRORISM- The term `homegrown terrorism' means the use, planned use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual born, raised, or based and operating primarily within the United States or any possession of the United States to intimidate or coerce the United States government, the civilian population of the United States, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

I find the distinction "force or violence", to be extremely chilling considering that if we look at the dictionary definitions of force that do not include violence we find this:

Just yesterday I posted a diary about a story about Time Warner rolling out 'metered' internet usage that has received a decent amount of coverage. Some of the commenters were very skeptical that it directly correlated to Network Neutrality. To them I now ask that you drink a big glass of STFU.

Via Wired:

Comcast will begin testing what the cable concern has described as a "protocol agnostic" approach to managing bandwidth traffic during high-peak periods, Comcast said Tuesday.

Selected customers in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and Warrenton, Virginia, are expected to receive e-mails on Wednesday highlighting the program. The 30-day tests are expected to begin Thursday.

NEW YORK (AP) — You're used to paying extra if you use up your cell phone minutes, but will you be willing to pay extra if your home computer goes over its Internet allowance?

Time Warner Cable Inc. customers — and, later, others — may have to, if the company's test of metered Internet access is successful.

On Thursday, new Time Warner Cable Internet subscribers in Beaumont, Texas, will have monthly allowances for the amount of data they upload and download. Those who go over will be charged $1 per gigabyte, a Time Warner Cable executive told the Associated Press.

"We think it's the fairest way to finance the needed investment in the infrastructure," Leddy said.
